Rock condor

„…Despite having a huge success, when I spread out my arms, I am a King Vulture...“  sings Michal Prokop in one of his songs. Known as a rock singer, songwriter and a member of the Beat Hall of Fame, he has been actively performing since 1963 and has been mainly associated with the music band Framus Five. Together they created one of the biggest musical gems of Czech rock history in 1972, the album City ER. He then became a member of the Semafor Theater and also briefly performed with a music band Mahagon. In the next decade, he released three very important records Kolej Yesterday, Snad nám naše děti... and Nic ve zlým, nic v dobrým. Since 1993, he has been performing with the band Framus Five again, as well as with acoustic trio. In January, Doupě will present all the key hits of his long-term career. You can look forward to an evening filled with high-quality music underlined by original lyrics.

Lucy Woodward

26. 2. USA/GB/NL

Unusual trio with a soul

If he wanted to, Charlie Hunter could manage the stage all by himself. This American guitar player is able to play seven-string and eight-string guitars at the same time as bass lines, chordal accompaniment and solo melodies - his technique is absolutely breathtaking. Thanks to his talent, he has been able to collaborate with Norah Jones and John Mayer, and has worked on more than 20 albums. Despite his indisputable skills, he has made a wise decision and invited the charismatic singer Lucy Woodward to participate in his project. Woodward has recorded four solo albums and accompanied artists such as Joe Cocker or Rod Stewart. The trio is completed by talented jazz drummer American Derrek C. Phillips Niek de Bruijn. This concert will be a perfect combination of deeply felt singing and unique guitar playing.

4. 3. CHILE/CZ

One-handed guitar virtuoso

Chilean guitarist Andrés Godoy lost his right hand at the age of 14 while working in a mill house, but that didn't prevent him from his dream of playing the guitar. He practiced very intensely and created his own technique based on a series of hammering and plucking, which helps him create rhythms, harmonies, and melodies. He called this technique Tatap. His compositions are sometimes accompanied by singing as well. His music shows the influences of South American music, progressive rock, jazz, and blues. In Doupě, his guest will be the outstanding Czech guitarist Standa Barek, who has worked with a number of foreign guitarists, including the Australian big-name Tommy Emmanuel. The duo will be accompanied by two young Czech talented artists. Join us and enjoy a truly unique musical experience with an acoustic guitar.

Blues of the Successful Rolling Stone, the American Blues Genius

Steve's life story is a romantic story about an American dream that came true. In his early childhood, he started playing the guitar, banjo, and piano. At the age of thirteen, he ran away from home and wandered around the USA. In the sixties, he began to make a living as a recording technician and he gradually started to dream of becoming a performer. In 2004, he released his first album Cheap. The turning point came in 2007 when he was offered to appear on the Joolse Holland TV show on BBC. As a result, he was offered a contract with Warner Bros and performed at several major festivals such as Glastonbury. He often performed with bass guitarist John Paul Jones from the legendary Led Zeppelin, Dave Grohl from Nirvana, the Wolfmother band, and he also had the opportunity to sing with Tom Jones. Don't miss out on the performance of this seventy-seven-year-old blues genius!

Pražský výběr

20. 4. CZ

Diamond of the Czech rock music
Pražský výběr is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and original bands of Czech rock music history. The band was founded by Michael Kocáb in 1976. The band was devoted to jazz-rock music at the time, which is captured in the first album Žízeň(Thirst) released in 1978. However, between the years 1980/1981, the band line up radically changed, which resulted in the formation of today’s well-known group of four musicians: Kocáb, Pavlíček, Hrubeš, and Čok. Over time, the band has transformed and so has their music. The band began combining new wave with elements of progressive rock and a pinch of punk rock spiced with a combination of Swahili and peculiar lyrics written by F.R. Čech. In 1982, the band wrote a song called Olda je přítel můj (Olda is a Friend of mine); starred in Juraj Herz’s film Straka v hrsti (The Magpie in the Wisp); and released an album carrying the same name. However, the last two named achievements went unnoticed and the band’s sold-out concerts were stopped in 1983 as the band got banned from performing for three long years. In 1987, the first official album was finally released under the label “Výběr” with Klaudius Kryšpín behind the drums. A year later, the movie Straka v hrsti (The Magpie in the Wisp), filmed in 1982, was finally released, which in the meantime had become legendary thanks to a secret propagation of the film by fans who were passing along cassette tapes. The band then recorded other albums and released concert recordings. It is also worth to mention that the band had Frank Zappa as a special concert guest, which released on the live Adieu C. A. or that Pražský výběr was performing as a supporting act at the Rolling Stones concert in Prague 2018.

333 Band

30. 4. CZ/USA

You probably know that 333 is a band that plays blues and some of the best songs of the 60s-70s. But what you might not know is how randomly the whole project came together ... Six years ago, Petr Chmela met Pavel Kowacz in a guitar shop when Petr took home the beautiful red Les Paul. The next day, however, Petr called back to either return this handsome guitar or ask for some guitar lessons, because the new instrument didn’t sound anything like when Pavel was playing it. And so the regular guitar lessons began. During one of them, Pavel invited Petr to the Malostranská beseda for an acoustic performance, where Pavel played with the American singer Brynn Stephens. That’s when Peter asked if he could occasionally join them playing the drums, but there was no venue where they could do so. So when there was an opportunity to buy three garages and turn them into a rehearsal room, there was no time to hesitate. Petr and Pavel started enthusiastically measuring the underground dugout space where the new Doupě was supposed to be built. They were figuring out where they could fit the drums, guitars, and keyboards…  Once it was built and completed, the band - already extended by Jirka and Kačka - started playing their first shows. Over time, there was an opportunity to enlarge Doupěby two more garages and that’s when the line-up grew and Martin and Richard joined the group. Last year, the band expanded to incorporate a wind instrument section, so the 333 suddenly became a group of ten. And this big crew looks forward to seeing you in the 2020 season, as well.
